Those who know our Paw-In-Chief Mr. Popo also know what a fussy eater he is. Absolutely not motivated by food which most people find strange since he is a beagle. And beagles are known to be big foodies. But one thing that he can’t have his meals without is a specific meal topper that also doubles up as his treat. Read on to know about five healthy meal toppers for dogs, including the one that’s Mr. Popo’s favourite.

Pumpkin: Boiled pumpkin without any salt, sugar or spices is not only a great meal topper for dogs but also helps in maintaining a healthy digestive tract. Its low in calories and high in carotenoids, potassium, Vitamin C and soluble fibre.

Carrots: Crunchy carrots are good treats for dogs. Nutrition-wise its rich in carotenoids, fibre, potassium Vitamins C and K that aids in blood clotting to help wounds heal. Carrots also contain magnesium, manganese, Vitamin B vitamins and phosphorus that helps in strengthening a dog’s skeletal system.

Blueberries: This is a great snack that you can share with your canine companions. Rich in antioxidants blueberries also supply Vitamins C and E, manganese and fibre. However, as with everything don’t overdo it while offering this delicious snack to your dog as it might affect bowel movement.

Sardine: Bursting withOmega 3 fatty acid sardine [packed in water if you are buying canned] is very nutritious as a meal topper. Omega 3s are known to improve dog’s skin, coat and brain while also reducing inflammatory processes. But always factor in calorie count based on your dog’s size and level of activity while offering this meal topper.

Boiled chicken hearts: Now this one is Mr. Popo’s absolute favourite meal topper and treat. It’s an excellent source of Vitamin B, iron and essential fatty acids. In addition, chicken hearts also contain phosphorus.

Although these five healthy meal toppers for dogs are quite easy to make and serve with things that are almost always available in our kitchen, to those who feel why dish up anything over dog food? Especially since dogs only about one-sixth the number of taste buds compared to humans.

Here’s why! Dogs have 125 million sensory cells compared to 5-10 million in humans. Research shows dogs can distinguish four flavour profiles – sweet, sour, salty and bitter. So yes, our dogs too like meal toppers that add a dash of excitement to their mealtime.
