As humans of our beautiful dogs, we can already confirm the countless benefits of pet companionship. Several studies prove that petting dogs increase the level of oxytocin [the hormone linked to warm, fuzzy feelings] in humans.
A recent study by the American Heart Association’s Healthy Bond for Life indicates how 95% of pet parents rely on their pet for stress relief. Almost 70% would rather spend time with their pet than watch television to de-stress.
Nearly half of the pet parents surveyed (47%) said their pets help them be physically active. That’s so true, I wouldn’t have walked kilometre after kilometre had it not been for my walk-loving boss-dog.

How our pets improve our lives
“Many pet owners have found emotional support from their pets, and science backs up the physical and mental health benefits to pet companionship,” said Glenn Levine, volunteer medical expert for the American Heart Association’s Healthy Bond for Life. “Chronic or constant stress is a key risk factor of heart disease and stroke, and studies show having a pet can improve mood, reduce stress and encourage healthy lifestyle habits like physical activity.”
The most popular ways pets help humans de-stress is by snuggling (68%), by making them laugh (67%) and helping them feel less lonely (61%). A pet can also increase work productivity, with 70% of employed pet owners saying they would be happier and more productive if they could have their pet at work.
On the other hand, as their humans we should also be mindful about ensuring our pets’ physical and emotional wellbeing. The study indicates that almost 69% pet parents take better care of their pet than themselves. There you go!
