Beware of the legalities
If you are living in the UAE, beware of the legalities around pet ownership. The UAE has strict laws around animal ownership, sale and exhibition. Below are some rules that every pet parent must be aware of:
If you have a dog, s/he must be vaccinated annually and registered with the Dubai Municipality.
Dogs who are imported from other countries must undergo necessary checks to get registered and obtain the required certificates within a month of arrival in the UAE.
You can only be allowed to breed dogs for sale with an approved license as mentioned by the Ministry of Climate Change and the Environment. Illegal breeding and selling of dogs [and other animals] will result in hefty fines, confiscation of animals and a possible prison sentence.
How to report animal abuse in the UAE
Since animal abuse is punishable by law in the UAE, if you witness it or feel concerned about the welfare of an animal, please report to the Ministry of Climate Change and the Environment.
You can use the following channels:
- Hotline: 8003050
- E-mail: info@moccae.gov.ae
In addition, since illegal selling of puppies [or any other animal] is not allowed, if you come across social media posts make sure to report such incidents. If you are keen to adopt a dog [or any other animal], go through an animal welfare organisation. There are several such organisations operating in the UAE. Look out for our next article where we will share a list of authorised rescue organisations from where pets can be adopted.
