The past two years have been challenging for each one of us in many ways. Some people lost loved ones, some lost jobs. Most of us are still afraid to hug even loved ones. When I saw my parents after over two years in December, I couldn’t even hug them properly. There is a lurking fear of the virus creeping up on us. But even amid loss of lives and livelihood many incidents showed us the power of love, generosity and humanness. Here’s one such story, a story of hope to start the new year on a positive note.
The many ‘what ifs’
Since the pandemic, we’ve often wondered what if something happens to us who will take care of Popo. Yes, we have loving and supportive friends who have repeatedly calmed us down promising they will. We’ve access to a safe day care and boarding facility yet there are what ifs.
Today’s story is about someone for whom this what if became a reality. John Burley from New York had to undergo long-term treatment in the hospital since Thanksgiving. He had no option but to give up his 13 years old dog Boomer to the Humane Society of Rome until he was fit to get back home.

Then something happened…
Nothing short of a miracle happened when Burley and Boomer’s situation became known. A nurse who works at the Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing where Burley used to receive his treatment came forward. Jennifer Smith, the nurse, decided to adopt Boomer until Burley was fit to take him back.
Smith paid the adoption fee, took Boomer for a medical check-up, and even shopped toys and doggy clothes along with food. Showing us what kindness looks like Smith reunited Burley and Boomer. We couldn’t think of a better first article in 2022 than this one.
