Some of our dogs can digest almost everything. Giving them treats is a delight although I think the healthier the treat the better it is. But some of our dogs have a sensitive tummy making it difficult for us to give them treats. We have to always think a lot before giving them anything new, even adding a new supplement must be well thought out, leave aside treats. So, in today’s article we are sharing a recipe by the incredible Dr Karen Becker that’s “perfect” for dogs with a sensitive tummy. Here’s a perfect home-made treat for dogs with sensitive tummy. This treat is made using ingredients that are specifically chosen for dogs with gastrointestinal issues. The carefully chosen ingredients are anti-inflammatory, low-residue and calming to the GI tract.

GI Soothing Bites: Recipe by Karen and Jennine Becker
Ingredients:
- Slippery elm powder (this can be bought from a health food store) – ¼ cup
- Good quality canned pumpkin – 1 cup
- Freshly ground ginger root – 1 teaspoon
- 3 fresh peppermint leaves or 5 drops essential oil of peppermint
- Potato flour – ¼ cup
Procedure:
- Blend all the ingredients together. Note that the mixture will be very stiff.
- Roll into quarter-size balls, and then press flat with fork. Place on a greased cookie sheet and bake at 325°F for 25 minutes.
- Let it cool before serving it to your dog.
- Store the extra portion in the refrigerator and consume within one week. If stored in the freezer this can stay fresh for up to three months.
However, like we always say before giving anything new to your dog, especially those with a sensitive tummy, discuss it with your trusted veterinary doctor. After all, we don’t want a dog with an upset tummy.
