There’s one wish that we humans of dogs have in common – that our dogs live a long, healthy and happy life. For that, each one of us make many commitments to ensure we are bringing up our dogs well, giving them the life that they deserve. Just like humans, every dog differs in their temperament, preferences as well as life span. That’s why it may not be wise to generalise the life span of our dogs. Although a few aspects such as breed and genetic predisposition might play a role in determining the health of our furry friends. In today’s article we will focus on 3 ways to help your dogs live longer, happier and healthier irrespective of factors mentioned above.
Walkies are a must
Exercising has many benefits. Let’s start with the release of hormones called oxytocin and endorphins that make our dogs feel happy and energetic during their walks. Second, regular walks help in maintain a dog’s bodyweight. Finally, walk time is a wonderful way for humans to bond with our dogs. But bear in mind that some dogs – based on age, breed and physical condition – may have certain restrictions in the duration of walk and the way they should be walked. Also, weather is a key factor in regulating your dog’s walk time.
Watch the waistline
As with humans, its very important to watch our dogs’ waistline too. Obesity in dogs can cause severe health issues including but not limited to diabetes, heart, kidney and liver diseases and joint issues. There could be many reasons for weight gain and at the first signs its prudent to consult a trusted veterinarian. Its also important to research and select a healthy diet for our dogs based on their nutritional requirements. If they are fond of treats, select healthy variants and limit the intake. Remember that you won’t be doing a favour by calling your overweight dog cute.
The tail must wag always
Of course, the tail must wag always. That’s what us humans toil so hard for 😉But here too there are things to watch. A wagging tail doesn’t always indicate a happy dog. There are many subtleties in the way dogs wag their tail. As their humans its important that we understand when the tail wags out of happiness and when our dogs tentatively move their tail as a sign of stress or uncertainty. So, always be watchful.
