Help them stay active
First things first – it’s important to understand that senior dogs need proper, age-appropriate exercise in order to stay healthy and active. Some senior dogs may enjoy a run in the park or a hike, while others might be content with their daily walks. So, stick to a schedule that best suits your dogs and make it fun for both of you. And if you notice sudden changes in your senior dog wherein s/he being lethargic than usual do consult your trusted veterinarian.
Mindfully choose their diet
Another crucial thing to remember is the diet we offer to our dogs, something that as humans we must be mindful of. The sooner we start giving them food that balanced, nutritionally rich and preferably responsibly made the healthier they will stay. Our dog has benefitted greatly since he transitioned to a raw diet more than three years ago. But some may not choose a raw diet and that’s fine as long as whatever food you’re offering to your dog is good for them. Please remember diet is extremely crucial in your dog’s wellbeing.
Build everyday rituals
From our personal experience we’ve realised how important it is to build everyday rituals. It not only deepens our bond with our canine companions but also helps both parties look forward to every day with joy. For example, we’ve recently started playing puzzle with our senior dog (he just turned 100). Its an activity that he looks forward to as much as us – our playtime has added so much joy to our daily life.
Make changes in the environment if needed
Getting the floor carpeted. Babyproofing sharp edges. Having furniture that’s not too high. Or even noise proofing and changing certain kind of lights, if required. These might seem like a lot but will go a long way in keeping your senior dogs safe.
Maintain a schedule for vet visits
Last but certainly not the least, if you’ve a senior maintain a schedule for vet visits. Getting regular blood works done is almost necessary after you dog reaches a certain age. In some cases, vet visits might be mandatory due to certain health conditions. But even if it’s not, its always a good idea to get annual health check-up done along with their vaccination.
