5 things to keep your dogs calm and comfortable on Diwali

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, is a time for celebrations. And celebrations include stuffing our mouths with sweets, bursting firecrackers and more. Both the things – eating sweets and loud firecrackers – aren’t good for our dogs and can make them anxious, stressed and sometimes sick. Diwali can be a difficult time for dogs – street dogs [in India] and dogs at home. So, here are 5 things to keep your dogs calm and comfortable on Diwali.

Don’t leave them alone

Start by making your dogs feel comfortable. It could be snuggling up together on the couch or creating a safe space for them at home where they can retreat if they feel overwhelmed by loud noises. Keep the curtains drawn to avoid sudden flashes of light. Sometimes dogs might feel anxious with too many guests at home. If required, let them rest in a space that is quiet. Don’t leave them alone. A warm hug can do wonders releasing endorphins to keep them calm and settled.

Keep the doors shut

When dogs feel anxious, they tend to hide in certain corners of the home. Some might even make attempt to run out of home not intentionally but out of fear. So, keep all doors at home firmly shut.

Distract them

Distraction could be a good way of keeping your dogs calm. You could offer them healthy chews or allocate frequent playtime. Playing with your dogs will tire them out and in turn calm them down.

Don’t feed them sweets and snacks

Don’t even think of feeding sweets and snacks to your dogs, unless it’s made specifically for them with ingredients suitable for them to eat. Also, keep them hydrated because constant panting out of anxiousness can make them dehydrated.

Stay calm

Finally, stay calm to help your dog feel calm and less anxious. Adding to the already existing chaos outside won’t help. Importantly, ensure that they aren’t exposed to toxic firecrackers nor candles that you may light.

Wishing you all a beautiful and noise/cracker free Diwali! Love, light and tail wags today and always.
